Why ecommerce business should take a closer look at female consumers

Jodi

If businesses are looking to increase profits and sales then perhaps they should take a closer look at their female customers. For a recent survey by comScore reveals the ways in which women are shaping the internet, especially when it comes to on-line shopping.

The survey is based in America but as this is the largest on-line shopping arena worldwide it does offer a good indicator for the UK market.

The research showed that women make more transactions on the Internet – and also spend more money in total. This is probably not that surprising given that women are more likely to be the shoppers in a family or couples situation but it is interesting to look at how they shop on-line compared to men.

The comScore survey found that women account for just less than half of the internet population in the US, but they generate 58% of ecommerce dollars

Women are also more likely to be social networkers. It is, therefore, a good idea to think about your company’s social media marketing campaigns to see if they will appeal to women.

The key consumer areas where women dominate on-line purchases are in clothing, accessories and jewellery. Another interesting revelation is that women spend more on video games and consoles than men. The likelihood is that these purchases were for their children.

So it seems, that regardless of who women are shopping for, the bottom line is that they’re big on on-line shopping and therefore the ones to target with any ecommerce sales and marketing drives.

More on-line shoppers ditching their baskets

Jodi

A couple of surveys have revealed that a rising number of people are abandoning on-line shopping carts for a range of reasons.
A report by Forrester shows that increased customer expectations and comparison shopping are part of the reason why an increased number (88%) of on-line shoppers leave their shopping baskets before completing a sale.

The top five reasons for doing so are:
.    44%: High shipping costs
.    41%: Not ready to purchase
.    27%: Price checking
.    23% Price too high
.    24% Saving products for later.

Meanwhile, a survey of more than 1000 visitors to Webcredible’s website found that hidden charges and registration were the most common reasons for abandonment.

While it is impossible to control customer expectation (other than to offer the best products at the best prices) there are a number of straightforward tips that ecommerce business owners can embrace.

•    Offer clear delivery charges on product pages and elsewhere.
•    Do not have hidden charges or fees at the point of checkout.
•    Try to avoid asking for compulsory registration at the point of checkout.
•    Make it easy to save a basket of shopping for another day or offer a wishlist facility.
•    Make it easy to resume a shopping session on the next visit.
