So Twitter has now entered the mainstream in terms of the number of people that now know about the social media site. These days, rather than being confronted with a blank face when you mention Twitter there is a much greater likelihood that people will nod knowingly. The only thing is that most still do not have a Twitter account.

According to a new survey by Edison Research: “Awareness of Twitter has exploded from 5% of Americans aged over 12 in 2008 to 87% in 2010.”((By comparison, Facebook’s awareness is 88%).

But 
while 44% have a Facebook profile, only 7% actively use Twitter. Even so half of those using Twitter follow companies, brands or products. So Twitter is still a good marketing tool for businesses – and is likely to grow now that many more people are talking about Twitter.
