Another hike in on-line shopping sales

Jodi

May 2010 saw total on-line sales grow by 22% compared to the previous year. And, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, this is the highest growth since June 2008.

It’s thought that sales were pushed skywards thanks to the warmer weather and two bank holiday weekends.

The survey showed that shoppers spent £4.5 billion online during the month, equivalent to £73 for every person in the UK. The Index shows a 3% increase in sales from April 2010 to May 2010.

Unsurprisingly there was a 23% rise in sales of alcohol as stocked up ahead of the World Cup.

Sales of electrical goods also went up by 13%, while clothes shopping online accounted for a 32% increase in sales figures.

Further proof of the viability of launching a successful on-line or ecommerce business, we’d have thought. Why not find out about the great website design deals being offered by WebCreation UK?

Why do we keep on logging on to Twitter?

Jodi

So many people complain about Twitter “breaking down”. The service all too often displays the “fail whale” icon but still the social network site continues to grow. Some 122 million are estimated to use Twitter.

So despite these technical problems why do so many people continue to use Twitter? Here are a few thoughts:

  • It’s free.
  • If you can’t tweet at that very moment, then you just come back later. (It’s like finding someone isn’t answering their phone).
  • Tweeting feels like a small message so you won’t lose sleep if you can’t tweet occasionally.
  • Some people like to have an enforced break from Twitter (it can be addictive!)
  • There is no better option for a having a quick chat or for briefly relaying a message to many, many people.

More than 50% of Americans click on newspaper sites

Jodi

A new report has revealed that 57% of the total internet audience in America visited on-line newspapers last month. This amounts to 123 million people.

The most popular view according to the comScore survey was the New York Times with 32 million visitors and 719 million pageviews during the month. Tribune Newspapers came second with 24.8 million visitors, then Advance Internet with 18.1 million visitors.

Experts claim that while print newspaper circulations drop, just as many people are still consuming news. It’s simply that they are now doing so on-line.

This could also be good for businesses that are looking for improved advertising outlets. Many companies have withdrawn their adverts from traditional newspapers as circulation dwindles but could now see the advantage of marketing their products or services on newspaper websites.
